We were in town most of the day yesterday so the animals were not able to free range as they are accustomed to. Shortly after we arrived home and were settling in we noticed a running frenzy in the backyard. It was the goats, sheep, and dogs all playing and running all over the place! We couldn't believe our eyes. We had never seen them doing this before. They were having a blast!
I finally thought to get the camera to record it and half of them decided they were done playing. I still got some fun footage. Even my three legged Barbado Sheep "Momma" was playing.
This is the best kinds of entertainment. We are simple and we are easy. Life is good.
Sheri, the last of our nanny goats to give birth finally kidded this morning. We have two more beautiful baby girls. The first has a white spot on her head. She wasn't responsive when she first came out and we were concerned for 30 minutes or so but she seems fine now. The second is black with brown sprinkled all over. Both have blues eyes.
We are also pleased at the tits on Sheri. Very milkable.
Sheri lick lick licking her new baby.
This is the first born who had a rough start. Harriet had to
work with her to get her to breath.
Harriet called to me from the other end of the house sounding panicked. She thought that Sugar's baby had gotten out and she was wondering what had happened to her sweater. Instead it was Penelope's new baby. Meet baby number two for the homestead in a little over 24 hours.
She is all black with a bit of gray around her ears.
Penelope is the mother of the first Pygmy/Nigerian Dwarf kids here on the homestead. Ornery and Ernestine.
Sire - Bandito 1/2 Nigerian Dwarf & 1/2 Pygmy
Bandito who's name became Pan when our daughter purchased him last year is the sire to all our babies here on the homestead. He has since been neutered so these are the last of his babies to be born. The rest falls on his son's shoulders.
Ornery Vaughn
Ernestine Neoma
Ornery and Ernestine were born June 11, 2011. They are not sure what they think about the new babies. they are use to being the babies of the herd and now someone else is getting that attention.
Sugar gave birth to her baby this evening at 4:20 pm. We thought with her being so big that she would have two maybe even three babies but she only had one. A mostly black female with a tuft of white between where her horns will be. Her ears are also salt & pepper. At 5 hours old she was already wanting to play. She is the first baby to be born in the new manger.
The baby was breach. Harriet was able to assist with the delivery when Sugar started having a strong contraction she pulled the baby right out. Thank God Harriet is a retired Lay Midwife. I'll be honest I was lost at what to do. I can build but birthing is a whole other ball game. I think Sugar did good for her first birth. Thank you for the new addition to the homestead Sugar.
Opal and I watching Sugar clean her new baby.
Opal wants to help Sugar clean the baby. I have to lay on
her to keep her from assisting.
Can't I help Momma?
Opal finally gets to help.
Such a pretty face
